What is Laser Hair Removal?

Laser hair removal is a non-invasive procedure that uses a laser, or a concentrated beam of light, to get rid of hair in different areas of the body. The beam of highly concentrated light is shot into the hair follicles. Pigment in the follicles absorb the light, resulting in destruction of the hair follicle.

Laser hair removal is one of the most commonly done cosmetic porcedures in the United States. Lasers are useful for removing unwanted hair from the face, leg, chin, back, arm, underarm, bikini line, and other areas.

The laser takes a fraction of a second and can treat many hair follicles at the same time.

Treatment Areas

Laser hair removal requires multiple sessions based off the size of the treamtent area, density of the hair, and clients personal result goals.  Some sessions will need to be scheduled a few weeks from each other and some areas will require numerous weeks between sessions.  This is because hair growth cycles can vary for each treatment area.

At Reverse by Lisa, we offer our  laser hair removal pricing by 15 minutes intervals, to be used on your area of choice.  Our registered nurse can help you decide how much time you would need based on your personal goals and treatment area size.

Examples of Treatment Sizes

The times given below are for the laser hair removal session only.

Small Areas 

Include the upper lip, chin, eyebrow, or jawline.  Most treatments can be done in 15 minutes.

Medium Areas

Include bikini, upper leg, lower leg, lower abdomen, under arms, fore arms, upper arms.  Most treatments can be done in 30 to 45 minutes.

Large Areas

Include full chest, back, upper and lower legs, or multiple areas of the body.

Most large areas would need at least 2 hours for treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

The laser hair removal system we utilize works best with fair skin and thick, dark hair.  Patients with darker skin will likely require more treatments.  People with blonde, light-colored hair might have a difficult time with our laser hair removal system.

It is important to speak with our technician to determine if you’re a candidate or not for our laser hair removal system.  Our team can assess your skin and hair before treatment with our free consultations.  If the laser hair removal system we use is not ideal for you, we can point you in the right direction of a better treatment option.

The  laser targets hair during the growth phase of the hair cycle.  Your hair follicles will reach this phase at different times, as a result, we would recommend a series of sessions for removal.

The specific number of sessions will depend on a few things:

  • Skin type
  • Treatment area and size
  • Hair density
  • Your personal goals for hair reduction

Since treatments will require multiple sessions, we would recommend scheduling a few sessions at a time, to suit your schedule and flexibility.

Preparing for Treatment

For each treatment you will wear special goggles to protect your eyes from the laser beam.  We may shave the site again if necessary.

During Treatment

We will press a hand-held laser device onto your skin, a cooling device on the tip of the device will be used to protect your skin and lessen the risk of side affects.

The beam will pass through your skin to the hair follicles.  The intense heat from the laser beam will damage the hair follicle, which inhibits hair growth.  You might feel a warm pinprick or a sensation of cold.  This may be uncomfortable for some, but shouldn’t be painful.

After Treatment

You may notice redness and swelling for a few hours after a session.  To reduce discomfort you can apply ice to the treated area.

During the process of laser hair removal it is extremely important to avoid sunlight exposure including tanning beds for six weeks or more.

Laser hair removal is considered a low-risk treatment option for hair removal.  Some side effects of laser hair removal include:

  • Burns
  • Itching
  • Swelling
  • Irritation
  • Redness
  • Discoloration
  • Scarring

Hair follicles will not shed immediately, however you will notice hair follicles falling out or shedding over a period of days to weeks after your first session.   Some may experience continued hair growth because hair follicles grow at different cycles, and the laser hair removal system works best on new-growth stages for the hair.  This is why we recommend a few sessions to reach hair reduction goals.

We recommend patients doing maintenance laser treamtent’s for long-term hair reduction.

It is important to prepare properly for your laser hair removal treatment.  Some of the things we recommend would be:

  • Staying out of the sun.  The laser beam is looking for dark hair follicles.  When your skin is darker due to the sun, the laser will have a hard time identifying the hair follicle from the skin tone.
  • Lightening your skin.  Avoid sunless skin creams to darken your skin.
  • Avoid other hair removal methods.  This includes plucking, waxing and electrolysis can disturb the hair follicle and should be avoided at least four weeks before treatment.
  • Avoid blood-thinning medications.  These would include aspirin or anti-inflammatory drugs.
  • Shaving treatment areas.  Trimming or shaving is recommended the day before laser treatment.  It will help remove hair above the skin that can result in surface skin damage from burnt hairs, but it leaves the hair shaft intact below the surface, which is needed for the laser hair removal beam.
